the one thing i didn't mention about thanksgiving was the fact that my 5 year old brother decided to unlock our bedroom door, get my nail polish out of the linen closet and paint a beautiful picture on our duvet.

john noticed it when he went upstairs to change after all of our guests departed. he came downstairs and said, "there's something on the duvet. you may want to take a look at it. it kind of looks like blood." good times. so, a half hour later (yes, i am lazy but i was POOPED from being on my feet all day) i went upstairs to check out the damage. i notice a glittery sheen to the "blood" and walk in the closet where i found my case of nail polish on our bench.

two issues. number one - the nail polish was in a case in the linen closet. why did he think he had the right to be snooping in our closet? and number two - why did he think he could unlock our door to get inside our bedroom? the way i was raised, if something is locked - it means don't come in. but according to my sister, a locked door is a game to him. he thinks it's fun to lock himself in rooms and hide from people.

SO. i call my dad and ask if he knew if michael had painted our duvet. he asked my brother and he said, "it was an accident." how is it an accident to purposely unlock a door, get nail polish out of the closet and PAINT? he may be 5, but he should know better than that, right? so i let it go.

but then, i get to thinking about it further and i get really upset. how could they not get mad at him? yeah, he's five but he should know right from wrong. at least that's what i think. and then, i call my dad/stepmom, again. my stepmom wanted to know what i had in my room that i didn't want my brother to see. she didn't understand that i wasn't afraid he would see anything, i felt violated. that's our room. i proceeded to get really upset and she handed the phone to my dad. my dad starts yelling at me and telling me that my brother doesn't know better, etc. BULLSHIT. then he tells me that there's no way to punish a five year old, especially since he doesn't even remember what happened at this point. whatever, so i hung up. i just can't deal with the fact that no one will take responsibility for his rights and wrongs.

my dad called back and talked to john. john was much more calm at explaining why we were upset. my dad seemed to understand what john had told him. and i thought it was over with. saturday, i called to apologize. my stepmom offered to buy us a new duvet but the color we have has been discontinued. good times.

THEN. last night at john's parent's house, his grandmother told us that it was our fault and that we should have been keeping an eye on him. excuse me? he's not our child. we shouldn't have to make sure he's behaving himself. am i totally out of line?

ok, enough. i am getting all worked up again.

ahh, thanksgiving. the day of giving thanks.

my morning started out around 6:30. i took the turkey out of the fridge and cleaned the sucker out. while i was cleaning it, i kind of felt bad for the sucker. it actually looked like a turkey instead of cooked poultry. there was a little feeling of guilt inside me while preparing it, but not that much! i then stuck the turkey in the roaster and proceeded to make dressing. two kinds. regular and fancy. the fancy had dried cranberries and chopped pecans. it was SO yummy. the regular? well, it kind of looked like poop. i didn't chop the onions small enough and the color was poopy brown. i guess it tasted ok, but like i said, definitely poopy looking. after that, i made some cranberry compote. it was ok...not the best i've ever had. and, the recipe only called for three tablespoons of sugar and i ended up putting in almost a cup. it was SO tart. then, i began preparing the corn pudding. it was yum. turkey bacon, corn, onions, cream, milk basically a heart attack in a bowl. while making the corn pudding, barbara made the sweet potatoes. holy smokes those were good. i ate so many helpings of those bad boys. we also had green beans almandine and mashed potatoes. ruthanne's friend, nancy taught me a secret ingredient to making creamy mashed potatoes. and if i may say so myself, they were probably the best mashed potatoes, ever. dessert was pecan pie, pumpkin pie and pumpkin cheesecake. YUM. we served dinner at 3:30, and by 7pm, i was passed out on the couch. cooking a meal like that is EXHAUSTING.

the only thing is, i don't know if i passed out from being tired or because i had to take a xanax when all of the mothers arrived and were showing me everything that needed to be done.

the highlight of the night? the fact that everyone did the dishes while i sat on the couch with my feet up.

so, if john agrees, i may want to do it again next year!

viva la turkey day!!

and in the grand tradition of giving thanks, here are a few things i am thankful for:

my loving husband who may have been a little irritated with me at times, yesterday. but it just proves how much he loves me, because he didn't get upset with me once.

my family who really made the day. i am so blessed to have such a caring family (near and far). without them, i would be nothing.

my health.

the roof over my head. no matter how broke we are because of it.

and last, i am thankful for my life. wednesday and thursday were so emotionally full for me. wednesday was the anniversary of charlie's death, it doesn't seem like it's been an entire year. i tried to keep busy most of the day but there were times where i just broke down. sometimes i forget she's gone. like she's just going to show up. i know that's not the case, but it's nice to have that feeling. the weird (i don't know if it's weird or just a fluke thing) thing was that i lit a yartzheiht candle for charlie on wednesday morning. these candles usually only stay lit for 24 hours. it's jewish tradition to light one on the anniversary of someone's death. anyway, when i was cooking yesterday, i'd look over at the candle and it was still burning and it brought a smile to my face. like charlie was watching over me. i know it sounds so incredibly cheesy, but hey - everyone's entitled to their own opinions. when i went to bed last night, the candle was still lit. i truly feel like part of her was with me all day yesterday. as corny as it may sound...

with thanksgiving three days away, it's only natural for our home to be in shambles.

saturday morning, the cat and dog joined forces to throw john over the edge. the cat was playing with john's contact lens case and knocked it on the bathroom floor. then, oliver found the case and proceeded to eat it. yes, he ate the contact lens case. and then...he ate one of john's contacts.

does anyone want a beagle?

and, what monday would be complete without an accident, of sorts? i fell face first onto the garage floor this morning. apparently, there are more steps than i realized going from the kitchen to the garage. and now, my left knee is all sorts of messed up.

just think, this is just the start of our week!

where to begin...

new orleans was a blast. we had a great time touring around the french quarter and eating and drinking. yes, i drank.

the first night, we went to jacques imo. (just in case you are wondering, they call it, jackimo.) we started off with an appetizer of shrimp, alligator and sausage cheesecake. holy cow. i never thought i would say this, but it was incredible. we devoured it. my main course was crab cakes with a side of mashed sweet potatoes and red beans and rice. john on the other hand, had the seafood platter. both were incredible. the highlight of the evening was when jack (the proprietor) came around and chatted with people. he had a 20oz water bottle filled with what appeared to be vodka and lime. asked us how our meal was, etc. and brought us crème brule. YUM. probably the best i've ever had. following dinner, we sat at the bar for a bit. jack came around once again buying a round of shots for a group of people. there was an extra, so the bartender put it in front of john. john made the comment, "you don't do shots, so i'll take it" and guess who took it? oh yeah, that would be me. then, jack saw john and me kiss and shouted, "round of drinks on me!". needless to say, we'll definitely be going back there.

saturday was great. we woke up and went down to the french quarter for some beignets and coffee at cafe du monde. it was wonderful. after that, we walked around looking at all the "sights" and enjoying the city. it truly is a great place to visit. so much culture. so much to see. we spent a good three hours just walking up and down streets. for lunch, we went to nola, emeril lagasse's newest restaurant in new orleans. it was so good. i don't think i have ever had food as amazing as my meal. i had grilled swordfish that was served on top of a grilled portabella mushroom, which was on a bed of pesto fettuccini. heaven. dessert was peanut butter pie. once we rested a bit, we continued our walking around the french quarter. we bought a few things that we had been asked to purchase and returned to the hotel for a nap before the evenings festivities began.

as part of our "prize" we were invited to a dinner which was held at smith and wollensky's chop house. maybe it's just me, but going to a chop house in new orleans when you're from kansas city was a bit odd. but whatever, it was good. there were about 45 in our group. free drinks, free food. you couldn't go wrong. dinner was good, definitely not as good as what we had previously consumed, but it was ok. we both had crab cake as an appetizer and mahi mahi as an entree. for dessert, they served a wonderful cheesecake. (notice how everything is about food.) we then went to a bar down in the quarter where the tab was open all night. 5 cosmos & 3 vodka cranberries later, i was good to go. i danced with the gold man, tried to talk to john's favorite sports radio personality and almost passed out on bourbon street. our night ended with a 6 dollar, two block cab ride which the cabbie took john's $20 and thought that was his tip. good lord.

and finally, yesterday's game. i have to be honest, the game was boring. no one was into it, no one was excited, everyone seemed to be hung over. the only exciting part of the game was the last two minutes but then there was an interception and the game was over. the best part of the game, was the ride back to the airport where the man who owns this restaurant gave a play by play of what went wrong in the game as well as the comments he assumed the coaches, radio personalities, etc would give. it was hilarious. when i get the clip, i am going to post it on this website. i'm just not sure people outside of kansas city would get it. regardless, it was HILARIOUS.

and that, in a nutshell was our weekend. there may be more to come, later.

it's not very often that i say this, but i am really disliking my job.

i am so tired of the disrespect i get just because i have the word, "assistant" after my title. people talk to me like i am an idiot and constantly interrupt me when i am on the phone. and, i can't begin explain the frustration that comes with this lack of disrespect.

and speaking of disrespect, i get really annoyed with listening to john's parents and grandparents go on and on about all of the anniversaries that have happened lately. as a matter of fact, when we were at his grandparent's a few months back, his grandmother SHOWED me the anniversary cards she had bought rick and kirsten. but did they call or send us a card on our anniversary? no. and then, john's mom told me yesterday that we should call his grandparents to see if the dvd/vcr that he set up for them last weekend was working alright. maybe it's my lack of maturity, but i don't want to help anyone who doesn't seem the least bit interested in me.

maybe it's just me, but to get respect, you've got to give respect.
